A blog about me, not kittens

Christmas in the Wintertime?

I’m sure my last post about moving surprised many of you, hell, probably all of you. Moving is something we want to do in the future, it’s all a question of where?

Doing more research, all signs were pointing to Australia to be the place to go to from an ease of Visa standpoint to the weather and to knowing the local language already and the general laid-back nature of the people in the country. There was just one problem…

Spiders.

Sure, there are many other ways to die in Australia; sharks, snakes, crocs, I could go on…but dear god…the spiders! Spiders like this one and others of varying sizes and hairiness.

Now I don’t hate spiders, but I’m used to itsy, bitsy spiders…not these giant, hairy behemoths. Kinda freaks me out. I’m not sure I want to uproot my entire live to lie awake at night worried that critters like that will be crawling all over me….NOTHANKYOU.

There are other reasons why we might opt to not go out of the country, financial, distance, etc…but it’s not out of the question either.

However, we’ve expanded our horizons to consider other parts of the country and we’re definitely looking into the Pacific Northwest. For what Tim wants to do after college, the businesses he needs to work at are based out there. Also, I’ve always wanted to live out there since I fell in love with the area years ago after a couple of visits. Sure it’s gray a lot of the time, but I’ll take gray skies with lush greenery than frigid sunshine and 20 below zero. If we want snow, we drive an hour up into the mountains. Want to go to wine country? Just a short drive to Oregon and the Willamette Valley. A little further and we’re in Northern California.

Like I said, it’s a ways off and who knows if we’ll even do it (’cause I’d have to sell our house at quite a loss)…but it doesn’t hurt to just talk about it. That’s the whole point of this blog, right?

  1. There are a lot of Minneapolis folk out in Seattle/Portland. And vice versa. I think culturally there are similarities.

  2. When I was out there (granted, it was in 2000, so perhaps it’s changed) people were more genuinely friendly and way more laid back. Also, for a nature-lover, the scenery is gorgeous – even in November.

I know some people from Seattle now, but I’m hoping to find people who already live there to question – like where to live, etc. Plus, the HQ of Ye Olde Part Tyme Jobbe is in the Seattle area, and I’ve always wanted to work FT for them again (’cause their benefits RAWK). Still a ways off, but now’s the time to plan things.

  3. I sure would miss the convenience of saying “Hey! Come over for dinner!” but I totally understand the desire to live elsewhere (esp in the winter months!). I’ve never been to Portland/Seattle but it’s on my list to visit.

  4. @Heather: speaking of such things, we haven’t had you guys over for dinner yet! Check your schedules and give me a few nights that would work for you guys in the next two weeks!

You totally need to visit that area…if you love nature, it’s stunning!
