No, that’s not where I went on vacation…although that would be epic.
I was on a well-earned vacation last week and I had a big list of things I wanted to get accomplished and failed miserably getting the majority of them done. I suppose a mental break was what I needed most.
Reviewing my vacation balances at work – I still have a ton of time I need to use up (like 2 weeks worth) before the end of the year that can’t be transferred to next year.
Because of that, I’m now looking to take the lion’s share of that time in the next 2 months as it’s our “slowest” time at work. And by “slowest”, I mean that I can get away from my desk for a time and the world won’t proverbially blow up in my absence1.
What will I do? Most likely projects and other various fun things. But I’m not going to have a plan about it – maybe a few of the days I’ll plan something with Tim before he goes back to college the end of August – like a day-long bike trip or a day hike somewhere close to the house.
Someone said to me yesterday that they couldn’t fathom how I could have so much vacation time to use – and how they had to scramble and scrape to accrue time to take off. Well, it’s a combination of 1) loving my job, 2) being an integral part of my group and 3) being so busy. The only time where I felt where I had been overworked was the weeks before my vacation as we had 2 (and sometimes 3) huge projects running consecutively. That turned me into a bit of a stress nugget and luckily my vacation started 2 days after the last, monstrous, stress-filled project. Which explains why I didn’t get much done during my vacation.
Such a dilemma: too much vacation. I must be nuts.

1 – Seriously, they gave me these post-it notes for Administrative Assistants day last year. I’m even more essential this year. At least that’s what they said in my review this year.
