I’ve kept my mouth shut thusfar (aside from my last post) regarding my opinion on Peggy Hill’s Sarah Palin’s nomination for the Republican VP candidate and I fear I may alienate some friends with my thoughts on the matter.

Yes, she’s a woman. Big whoop. She’s a woman I oppose on every single issue. Also, there’s just something about her that doesn’t jive with me. Call it intuition or whatever you want to – something about her doesn’t sit right with me. From experience, anyone who’s set off that feeling in me has ALWAYS turned out to live up to that intangible expectation. And my gut’s telling me that we’re screwed if that woman gets into office.

Anyway, there’s this letter getting passed around written by someone from Wasilla telling (what seems to be) the truth about how Ms. Palin operates: if you don’t kiss her ass, you’ll pay. It explains a lot, actually, of why my “something isn’t right” (SINR) radar keeps going off like crazy. She just comes across as one of those women who has always gotten what she’s wanted, gotten by for so long on her looks and uses that to connive her way into where she wants to be rather than work her way there legitimately. As one of my co-workers said “look at her shoes. Nobody who’s built their life on politics and public service totters around in peep-toe stilettos.” Just the mere fact that there’s press coverage over what friggin SHOES she’s wearing and not her policies and outright red flags over her past is worrisome.

But at least there’s parts of the mainstream media (as much as I loathe to use that phrase) that aren’t drinking the crazy GILF Kool-Aid. A story from the AP today goes through last night’s Republican convention speakers and debunks every stretched truth to outright fabrication. Here’s a snippet I found particularly interesting:

PALIN: “I have protected the taxpayers by vetoing wasteful spending … and championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. I told the Congress ‘thanks but no thanks’ for that Bridge to Nowhere.”

THE FACTS: As mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million. In her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation. While Palin notes she rejected plans to build a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport, that opposition came only after the plan was ridiculed nationally as a “bridge to nowhere.”

What town of less than 10,000 people NEEDS $27 million dollars for anything?

My SINR just keeps telling me that there’s something more sinister under the so-called “beautiful” surface of Palin, something that means nothing but trouble for this country if she gets into office. With McCain’s health at stake, she just seems like the perfect Republican puppet to continue the destructive policies of the past 8 years. We’re rapidly becoming a non-entity on the world stage and other countries think we’re a joke. Our economy is terrible, people are losing jobs and yet the wealthy of this country just keep getting richer off the struggles and failures of working Americans. We need our pride back. We need our good standing in the world back. We need change.

I don’t typically get political – but I fear for the future if Obama/Biden don’t win this election.
